Coach Marini is excited to be heading into his third year of being the head coach at Denver South. He will also serve as defensive coordinator, linebacker coach, and strength and conditioning coach. Coach Marini is in his 18th year of teaching social studies in Denver Public Schools, the past 6 years at Denver South High School the previous 10 years at Abraham Lincoln High School. He has coached football at a plethora of schools, including Lincoln, Heritage, Cherry Creek, Littleton and Denver South. In addition to football, he coached 8 years of basketball at Lincoln during their two state championships (2007 & 2008). Coach Marini played strong safety at Heritage High School (Class of ’98) and at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA (National Playoff Qualifier, 1999). He would like to thank his wife Christy (teacher at Campus Middle School) for her added role in helping the Rebels this year (Math Tutor!)and for generally putting up with his nonsense.
Offensive Coordinator-Kyle Baker
Assistant Coach-Adrian Tyson
Coach Tyson was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, along with his seven siblings. His mother was a school teacher and his father was an attorney, Judge and Senator. He graduated from Davidson High School where his football career started as a player and then later a volunteer coach. Coach Tyson attended the University of Alabama and obtained my degree in teaching. He was proud to play as a defensive tackle and middle linebacker under Paul “Bear” Bryant. He continued my education and obtained my Master’s Degree at the University of South Alabama. He have taught a total of 25 years, the last 18 at Denver South High School. Coaching is his passion; he is presently the defensive line coach as well as the head track coach.
Wide Receiver Coach-Terrance Metcalf II
Coach Metcalf will be coaching wide receivers in his first season with the Rebels. Coach Metcalf was a 3-sport athlete in high school (including taking 2nd in the state in the 400m) before playing wide receiver at South Carolina State University. In his junior year at SCSU, Coach Metcalf averaged 32 yards per catch and in his senior year, he racked up 30 catches for 724 yards, 8 receiving TD’s and 1 running TD. Coach Metcalf also had a brief NFL career and played overseas in NFL Europe where he was a teammate of Coach McCoy. The son of former NFL All-Pro Terry Metcalf and brother of former NFL All-Pro Eric Metcalf said that he coaches football because, “I enjoy giving back and sharing my life experience. I want these young men to understand the value of discipline and sacrifice.” Coach Metcalf has been coaching since 2004 and has worked with WR’s, RB’s and DB’s. He also has a passion for music production/audio engineering.
Defensive back Coach-Derek McCoy
Coach Derek McCoy will be coaching defensive backs at South in his 2nd year. McCoy joins South after three years of leading a character development program for the Futures Spring Football League. Prior to this, McCoy has worked in schools with a local non-profit called Project PAVE since 2011, working with youth from middle through high school to support healthy relationship behaviors and expressions of identity. Prior to his work with PAVE (www.projectpave.org), McCoy taught and coached football, basketball and track at the middle through high school levels in Mapleton Public Schools from 20017-2011. Prior to this, McCoy had a brief two and a half year (2004-20007) career in the NFL, following his career as a wide receiver at the University of Colorado from 1999-2003 (2001 Big XII Champions).
JV Head Coach/Varsity OLB Coach Paul Grubesic
Coach Grubesic is a transplant from Chicago, IL …where he was a 3- sport athlete at Hinsdale South High School (Football, Hockey and Baseball). He then attended Illinois State University and played both Hockey and Baseball. Coach Grubesic moved to Colorado Springs in 2001 with his wife and young son. He is currently the Head Baseball Coach here at South HS (3rd Season) and has held that position at both Chatfield HS and Palmer Ridge HS. In addition to coaching baseball, Grubesic spent 2 years as the JV special teams coordinator and Varsity Assistant (QB, WR and DB) for Palmer Ridge Football under current Head Coach Tom Pulford. There he coached current Air Force QB Isaiah Sanders and 5 others who are now playing at the next level. He is married 24 years to Audree and has a son Jake who plays College Baseball at Piedmont International in Winston Salem, NC and a daughter Jessee who is a 2020 student athlete here at South.
JV O-Coordinator/Varsity OL Coach Mike Patterson
Varsity D-Line Coach-Jason Aikin
Jason Aikin played high school ball for Ponderosa (Parker, CO) all along the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Earning all-conference honors as a senior along with 2 varsity letters. Coach Aikin also played basketball and track earning 3 letters for track. He went on to walk on at Colorado Mesa to throw the shot put and discus, currently studying Human Performance and Sports at Metro State. Last season coached the freshman defense in my first season coaching. Coach Aikin enjoys coaching because he wants to give these high school athletes and students the most knowledge they can have to be successful on and off the field of play. C-Team Head Coach-Frank Dickerson
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Coach Dickerson attended John Hope College Prep High School where he started 4 years varsity and was selected All-City All-Star in 2005. John Hope maintained a 35-4 record during Coach D's 4 years. He then attended Joliet Jr. College before attending Illinois State University as a walk-on, playing WR and QB. Coach D returned to John Hope as offensive coordinator in 2012 and then moved to Sullivan High School where he was special teams coordinator in 2014. Coach Dickerson moved to Denver, CO in 2016 and became Manuel High School's special teams coordinator before joining the Rebels this year to coach RB's and serve as JV offensive coordinator. Coach D looks forward to building relationships and producing a winning mentality in his RB's. He has helped tutor two All-State QB's and three All-City WR's in his career and is excited to bring his energy and exuberance to the Rebels. The Dickerson family consists of his two beautiful daughters, Myla and Alayia, and his loving wife of 6 years Kayla.
C-Team D-Coordnator-Rob Tiff
Coach Tiff grew up in a small town in rural South Dakota has a 3 sport Athlete: Football, Wrestling, Track. Tiff attended the University of Sioux Fall to play football. While attending USF he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with Minors in Management, Marketing and Coaching. For 4 seasons Tiff helped the USF dominate on both Special Teams and Defense earning (team selected) special teams captain 3 years and an overall record of 49-4 and NEVER losing a home game. In his time there USF won 2 NAIA National Championships. After college Tiff played a small stint in Arena football before hanging up the pads to coach. Coach Tiff took a job as an assistant on a small Catholic School High School team playing 9-man football (Yes that’s a real thing haha). He had a great experience coaching there for 5 years before moving to Denver, CO for a change of pace. After moving to Colorado Coach Tiff spent one season as a volunteer at Denver North High School and now is here at Denver South where he will be helping with defense and assistant C-Team coach.
C-team Special teams Coord. Ben "Blade" Speicher
Coach Ben "Blade" Speicher is entering his fourth year of coaching football at South High School. He will be the Special Teams coordinator for the C-team and help coach the receivers and defensive backs. Coach Blade is also entering his 8th year teaching mathematics, all at South. In addition to coaching football, Coach Blade has a hand in many sports at South. Most notably he is the head coach of the wrestling team. When he isn't coaching football or wrestling, he helps out with the Unified Sports program. Prior to joining the football staff, he also spent 5 years coaching soccer at South...Coach Blade grew up in Boston where he attended Boston Latin School and was a 3 sport Varsity athlete, captaining and earning All-League honors for both football and wrestling. He later attended Trinity College (CT) where he was a 4 year letter winner and 2 year captain for the wrestling team. He even once met Ben Affleck and is a 3-time defending Fat-Off Champion. During his free time, he enjoys traveling, going to Casa Bonita, engaging in local politics, and listening to Taylor Swift.
